Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova surprised the US Open 4 years after the Serena Williams incident

The year’s final Grand Slam event is underway, and players are flocking to Arthur Ashe Stadium to compete at their very best. With them comes a flurry of interesting sartorial choices too. Not only players, though, but tennis greats who once shared the same court also never miss an opportunity to return to the tournament and turn heads. This time, Maria Sharapova has chosen a journey to New York – 17 years after her US Open Grand Slam triumph to relive her memories while seeing other players vie for their own piece of US Open history.

Despite the fact that she has experienced difficulties at the US Open throughout her tennis career, following her tense encounter with Serena Williams almost four years ago, the Russian tennis player has returned to the US Open in an entirely new persona. How did the tennis legend catch attention this time?

Maria Sharapova graces the US Open

For the 36-year-old Russian tennis player, the US Open will be an unforgettable part of her tennis career. Although she has a 2006 title at Flushing Meadows to her name, her last match at the tournament before retirement was unfortunately unmemorable. It was here that her arch-rival, Williams, defeated her in the first round in 2019, demolishing her last hope of winning a Grand Slam. But now, leaving everything behind, she has embraced the tournament for the first time since retiring in 2020.

Recently, a renowned journalist took to Twitter account to update fans regarding how the Russian beauty has graced the US Open with her sparkling presence. Looking stunning in a red outfit and with her hair down, she turned up to witness the first-round face-off between Coco Gauff and Laura Siegemund. Interestingly, she is one of those WTA stars who has played many enchanting night sessions at the same tournament, and now, after years, she has come to enjoy the same.

Although she won the 2006 US Open, Sharapova’s presence in New York was a welcome surprise to a lot of tennis fans. In fact, she also shared a few of her Arthur Ashe moments with her fans on social media just a few days ago.
